16 Haziran 2025’te Gölbaşı Ata Çiftliği’nde düzenlenen “Tarım ve Gençlik Buluşması” etkinliğinde, Ankara Üniversitesi Ziraat Fakültesi Öğretim Üyesi ve Moleküler Entomoloji Laboratuvarı direktörü Prof. Dr. Umut Toprak gençlerle bir araya geldi. Etkinlik, Ankara Büyükşehir Belediyesi ve Kent Konseyi iş birliğiyle Tarım Gıda Düşünce Atölyesi tarafından gerçekleştirildi.
Konuşmasında genç girişimcilere hitap eden Prof. Dr. Toprak, tarımda sadece üretimin değil, strateji, vizyon ve katma değerin konuşulması gerektiğini vurguladı. En dikkat çeken mesajlarından biri üretimle değer arasındaki farkı anlatan şu çarpıcı örnek oldu:
“1 kg hurda demir 1 dolar eder. Nal yaparsanız 20 dolar, vida yaparsanız 200 dolar, saat zembereği yaparsanız 50 bin dolar olur. Tarımda da aynı mantık geçerli: Hurdaya değil, zembereğe oynamalıyız.”
Katma değerli üretimin yalnızca sanayide değil, tarımda da mümkün olduğuna dikkat çeken Toprak, gençlere şu alanlarda açık fırsatlar olduğunun altını çizdi:

Böceklerden kitosan üretimi: “Çok ucuza üretilebilir ama sonucu çok kıymetli; kitosan inanılmaz pahalı bir biyopolimer. Türkiye bunu rahatlıkla üretebilir.”

Yeni nesil mikrobiyaller ve biyopestisitler: “Bunu doğru dürüst yapan neredeyse yok. Neden bu boşluğu biz doldurmayalım? Neden bu ürünleri ihraç etmeyelim?”

Böcek sistemlerinden insülin üretimi, mikrobiyal platformlarla çevreci çözümler, akıllı biyosensörler: “Bunların hepsi yeni nesil iş sahaları. Gençler bu alanlara yönelmeli.”
Toprak, gençlere yalnızca sisteme eklemlenmeyi değil, boşlukları sezip oraya oynamayı önerdi:
“Boşlukları iyi koklayın ve oraya oynayın. Değer üretmenin yolu budur. Tarım artık yalnızca tarla değil; laboratuvar, start-up, ihracat ofisidir.”
Etkinlik, Dünya Gazetesi yazarı Mine Ataman’ın moderatörlüğünde gerçekleşen panel oturumlarıyla zenginleşti. Tarımsal Ar-Ge’nin sahaya entegrasyonu, üniversite–sanayi–çiftçi iş birliklerinin artırılması ve gençlerin tarımda dönüştürücü aktörler olarak öne çıkması, buluşmanın temel gündemini oluşturdu. The New Language of Agriculture: Biotechnology, Export, and Smart Entrepreneurship
Prof. Dr. Umut Toprak Shared Visionary Insights at the Youth & Agriculture Gathering
On June 16, 2025, Prof. Dr. Umut Toprak, faculty member at Ankara University’s Faculty of Agriculture and Director of the Molecular Entomology Laboratory, joined young participants at the “Youth and Agriculture Gathering” held at Gölbaşı Ata Farm. The event was organized by the Agricultural Food Thinking Workshop in collaboration with Ankara Metropolitan Municipality and the City Council.
In his talk aimed at young entrepreneurs, Prof. Dr. Toprak emphasized that agriculture today is not only about production, but also about strategy, vision, and value creation. One of his most striking messages compared raw material with value-added transformation:
“1 kg of scrap iron is worth 1 dollar. If you make a horseshoe, it’s 20 dollars; a screw, 200 dollars; a watch spring, 50,000 dollars. The same logic applies to agriculture. We shouldn’t play the scrap game—we must aim for the spring.”
Underscoring that high value-added production is not limited to industrial sectors, Toprak pointed out concrete opportunities in agriculture for the next generation:

Chitosan production from insects: “It can be produced very cheaply, yet chitosan is an incredibly expensive biopolymer. Turkey can easily become a producer in this field.”

Next-generation microbial platforms and biopesticides: “Almost no one is doing this properly. Why shouldn’t we fill that gap? Why shouldn’t we be exporting these products?”

Insulin production through insect systems, eco-friendly microbial innovations, smart biosensors: “All of these are emerging business arenas. Young people should turn toward them.”
Toprak urged youth not just to integrate into the system, but to sense the gaps and build into them:
“Sniff out the gaps and play into them. That’s how value is created. Agriculture is no longer just the field—it’s the lab, the start-up, the export office.”
The event featured vibrant panel discussions moderated by Dünya columnist Mine Ataman. Key themes included transferring agricultural R&D to the field, strengthening university–industry–farmer collaborations, and positioning youth as transformational actors in the future of agriculture.
