Umut and and Salva Herrero (University of Valencia) organized the SIP Cross-Divisional Symposium “The multiple layers of Host-Pathogens Interactions” for the Annual Meeting of the Society for Invertebrate Pathology, Valencia 2019.

The symposium brought scientists together those working on insect defense mechanisms against pathogens such as baculoviruses and bacteria such as Bacillus thuringiensis, and their infection processes.  The symposium also provided the platform for discussing more effective microbial control measures via the knowledge on insect defense mechanisms & infection processes. The keynote speakers and title of their talks were:

  1. David Heckel, Max Plank Institute, Germany-“What can we learn about Bacillus thuringiensis as a pathogen and its victims, from the targets of its toxins?”
  2. Martin Erlandson, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada- “The insect gut barrier and baculovirus infection processes”
  3. Vera Ros, Wageningen University, Netherlands-“Behavioural manipulation of the host”
  4. Andreas Vilcinskas, University of Giessen, Germany-“Pathogens associated with invasive or introduced insects threaten the health and diversity of native species”
  5. Ping Wang, Cornell University, USA-“Effect of the peritrophic membrane on toxicity of Bt Cry toxins and infection of baculoviruses in insects”
