The Program of “Cross-roads of Diapause and Metabolism” Symposium

News

The “Cross-roads of Diapause and Metabolism” led by Umut, Dr. Russell Groves (University of Wisconsin Madison, USA) and Dr. Daniel A. Hahn (University of Florida, USA) will be held at the upcoming Annual Joint Meeting of Entomological Society of America and Entomological Society of Canada, in Vancouver, Canada on November 13-16, 2022!  The complete list of keynote speakers has been recently approved. Ten speakers will be giving keynotes in the symposium:

  1. Russell Groves, University of Wisconsin Madison, USA “Changes in Colorado potato beetle emergence and diapause phenology; linkages to fatty acid composition”
  2. Umut Toprak, Ankara University, Turkey “Lipid metabolism in diapause”
  3. Cansu Doğan, Ankara University, Turkey “Endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondrial cross-talk during hibernation”
  4. Jacqueline Lebenzon, University of California, Berkeley, USA “Mitochondrial homeostasis and metabolic suppression during diapause in the Colorado potato beetle”
  5. Solmaz Ghanbari, Ankara University, Turkey  “New Insights into Insulin-signaling Pathway in hibernating Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata
  6. Joseph Rinehart, USDA, USA “The effects of microclimate on diapause in a solitary bee
  7. Nicholas Teets, University of Kentuck, USA “Coping with the longest winters in the world: Energetics in an Antarctic insect”
  8. Katie Marshall, University of British Columbia, Canada “Local adaptation in the plasticity of cold tolerance in the eastern spruce budworm”
  9. Daniel A. Hahn, University of Florida, USA “ROS and hypoxia signaling regulate periodic metabolic arousal during insect dormancy to coordinate glucose, amino acid, and lipid metabolism”
  10. Alden Siperstein, Ohio State University, USA Characterizing seasonal changes in mosquito diapause status and host use

The symposium aims to bring scientists and students studying diapause and metabolism and will be held as a “section symposium” of the Physiology, Biochemistry, and Toxicology (PBT) Section of ESA. This year’s theme for the Annual Meeting is “Entomology as Inspiration: Insects through art, science, and culture”.
