The “Cross-roads of Diapause and Metabolism” organized by Umut, Dr. Russell Groves (University of Wisconsin Madison, USA) and Dr. Daniel A. Hahn (University of Florida, USA) was completed succesfully on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 in Vancouver during the Joint Meeting of Entomological Society of America and Entomological Society of Canada. The symposium was organized as a section symposum of Physiology, Biochemistry and Toxicology division of Entomological Society of America. The symposium started by opening speech by Umut and Russ. A total of eight talks were delivered by the invited speakers including Umut and Solmaz from MOLEN Lab. In the first half of the symposium, Benjamin Bradford (University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA) delivered a talk on “Changes in Colorado potato beetle emergence and diapause phenology: Linkages to fatty acid composition”, while Umut delivered the second talk under titled “Lipid metabolism in diapause”. The third talk “Mitochondrial homeostasis and metabolic suppression during diapause in the Colorado potato beetle” was presented by Jacqueline Lebenzon (University of California, Berkeley, USA), while Solmaz delivered the last talk “New insights into insulin-signaling pathway in hibernating Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata” before the break. After the coffee break, Nich Teets (University of Kentucky, USA) “Coping with the longest winters in the world: Energetics in an Antarctic insect”, Katie Marshall (University of British Columbia, Canada) “Local adaptation in the plasticity of cold tolerance in the eastern spruce budworm”, Dan Hahn (University of Florida, USA) “ROS and hypoxia signaling regulate periodic metabolic arousal during insect dormancy to coordinate glucose, amino acid, and lipid metabolism”, and Alden Siperstein “Characterizing seasonal changes in mosquito diapause status and host use” delivered their talks. The symposium was completed by the closing remarks of Umut. David Denlinger, an Emeritus professor at the University of Ohio and a world-wide well-known expert of insect diapause, joined the group picture.
